Space & Astronomy News

  • Is ΛCDM done for? It's withstood a lot of challenges, and the latest is a new statistically unfavorable comparison with the "timescape" model that argues what looked like accelerating expansion due to dark energy could be from gravity of the structure of the universe's matter. It will take more than one study to overturn an established theory, but it'll certainly be interesting to see how more observational evidence factors in!
  • As an astronomy enthusiast, you may already know that the carbon on which all known life is based is created in stars (we are, indeed, stardust). That's awesome enough, but how cool is it that the carbon also probably made its way outside of the galaxy at some point!
  • The unexpectedly long stay of Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams on the ISS just got even longer, as NASA pushed back the expected date of the Crew-10 launch (they'll be returning on that vehicle). No earlier than late March now, and they were originally supposed to come back in June! Also, congratulations to CAPT Williams, who was selected as a 2025 Distinguished Graduate of the Naval Academy (also my own alma mater, beat Army! '09!).

You probably didn't miss it, as it's the most popular video on my channel, but just in case! Learn more about the cloud of small bodies in the outer reaches of the solar system.

Lunation 1270 It's just a baby (exoplanet)! Space & Astronomy News Dark gaps in disks around young stars are thought to be formed by protoplanets, which clear out the gas and dust to create the gap. But the protoplanets themselves have never been observed—until now!A growing baby planet photographed for first time in a ring of darkness JWST gets a lot of recognition for what it observes in the distant reaches of the universe, but the space telescope is also a powerful tool for uncovering more...

Lunation 1269 Another exoplanet next door Space & Astronomy News The Alpha Centauri system has known exoplanets around Alpha Cen C (Proxima Centauri), but Alpha Cen A might also be a planet-hosting star! The potential planet is a gas giant in the habitable zone, and orbiting a distance of 2 AU it will be, if confirmed, the closest-in orbit of any directly imaged exoplanet.NASA’s Webb Finds New Evidence for Planet Around Closest Solar Twin A new sednoid was discovered in the outer solar...

Lunation 1268 Hello, Rubin! Space & Astronomy News I have been so excited for the Rubin Observatory to start its mission (personally, I'm particularly looking forward to the huge increase in orbital data and what it will tell us about the solar system), and the first look did NOT disappoint! The Cosmic Abundance image might be one of my new favorite space photos.Ever-changing Universe Revealed in First Imagery From NSF–DOE Vera C.
